People I know often ask me how to find a good counsellor. I usually reply by telling them that firstly, it's important to know that a prospective counsellor is suitably qualified and has memberships to a counselling body that ensures ethical practice. Secondly, what research tells us is that the success of therapy is largely due to factors which point to the quality of the relationship between the counsellor and client.
That's why I always talk briefly to prospective clients over the phone for 10 or 15 minutes, so that we can both get a sense of how we feel about each other. My prospective clients need to feel that deep down, I can help them with their problem or the therapy is not going to work.
My name is Benjamin and I'm a counsellor & psychotherapist. These two terms are often used interchangeably and there is a lot of crossover, however I make the distinction that counselling is usually brief and lasts a few sessions whereas psychotherapy is in depth and usually longer term. I can provide both depending on what your needs are and how you would like to work.
Although I have worked in a range of counselling settings for over 10 years, my specialities include working with depression, anxiety, connecting with self/identity, personal development and integrating non-ordinary experiences.
I have a masters degree in counselling, two diplomas in transpersonal therapy and professional membership to the Australian Counselling Association. I work part time as a counselling lecturer at a university in Melbourne. I also provide counselling supervision to therapists.
