Kim Alexander

After completing my medical degree at Monash University in 1986, I worked in General Practice for over 10 years. The aspect of my work I most enjoyed was talking to people and understanding the way they think and behave.
So I started to do extra training in counselling and therapy including a Diploma of Family Therapy which I completed in 2004.
Since then, I have worked solely in counselling and therapy. I see individuals with all sorts of problems including anxiety and depression, and have a particular interest in Adolescent Mental Health which developed further during my seven years work at Headspace.
Given my training I also see couples, siblings, parents with their children and entire family groups . In this work I hope to give families the skills to understand one another and have the strategies to communicate and manage relationships that are distressing them.
I can't say that I strictly use one particular type of therapeutic approach, but many according to what may help. So systemic therapy, solution focused, narrative, CBT and many other types of therapeutic approaches may all be encountered in the therapy room (sometimes even in the same session!)
I believe strongly that best therapy is achieved when there is trust in the therapist's ability but also their genuine desire to understand and help.
